Activities for the Project

The following three activities will guide you towards completing the power our playground renewable energy assessment task. Across the project, you will investigate energy transformations, use scientific evidence to plan a solution and produce, test and provide a renewable energy prototype.

Knowledge and Understanding

Activity 1 develops your understanding of renewable energy and how energy transform from one form to another, using that knowledge and understanding you'll carry out the evidence to help design your prototype. The introductory video will explore renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy, and how they can be used in everyday life. You will then investigate  energy transformation and consider how this knowledge can help you design an effective prototype.

Process and production skills

Activities 2 and 3 allow you to apply this knowledge through design and production process by identifying and defining research to produce and implement a design for your prototype.

Activity 1

Step 1: Begin By downloading the energy detectives worksheet before watching the introductory renewable energy video, As you watch, identity the type of energy and how they transform from one to another

Step 2: With a class peer, discuss your observations and complete the worksheet, together identifies examples of transformation that occur around the school.

Step 3: In small groups, investagiate how does the number of wind termbine blades affect its performance. record your findings and write a conclusion

Step 4: Share your findings with the class and post your results on google classroom.

Activity 2

Step 1: Research

Think about what you discovered in Activity 1. Choose a problem or need within the school that renewable energy could assist with. Research whether solar or wind energy could be a solution.

Step 2: Create your ideas

In your groups draw three different design ideas for your renewable- energy device. Label your drawings to show what it does, the materials you will use and important measurements

Step 3: Choose your best design

As a group choose your best design for the prototype, by comparing the 3 with another group. Think about which design will work best, be safe to build and use materials responsibly.

Step 4: Make a plan Portfolio

Work with your group to create a project plan. List the steps you will follow, materials and tools you need, and the job roles of each member.

Step 5: Get Feedback

Share your ideas with other groups, use 2 stars and a wish to receive feedback and make one improvement to your design.

Activity 3 - (3 lessons)

Step 1: Get ready to build

Look over your project plan and collect the materials and tools you need. Make sure everyone knows their job and how to work safely

Step 2: Build your Prototype

Follow your plan to build your renewable-energy device for the school. Carefully measure, cut, bend and join your materials. Use tools safely and try to reuse all matierals to reduce waster

Step 3: Test your design

Follow your plan to build your renewable-energy device for the school. Carefully measure, cut, bend and join your materials. Use tools safely and try to reuse all matierals to reduce waste.

Step 4: Improve and retest

Use your test results to make at least one improvement to your prototype. Test it again and compare your new results with your final results

Step 5: Evaluate and present ( assessment )

Complete your final evalution explaning how energy changes in your device, what worked well and what you improved. Present your prototype for 3 mins and submit your plan and protoype to google classroom.
